Orchard Retreat

Project type: Design and build
Location: Luggate, Central Otago

The Brief:

Privately situated within a developed orchard, the brief was to create a 270m² home that could provide both a retreat and a central hub to the daily operations of its surroundings.

The Project:

Glimpses through mature vegetation reveal a dwelling poised above an extensive pond. The home comprises three distinct wings, with a central open-plan living area flanked by two segregated sleeping quarters, creating both privacy and an inviting communal living space.

Rusted Corten steel linkways seamlessly merge into the architectural form, creating thresholds between the internal zones. The exterior combines black Coloursteel, weathered timber and rusted Corten cladding, adding depth and character to the facade.

Inside, high vaulted ceilings and extensive glazing frame views across the tranquil pond to the Pisa Ranges beyond. Expansive northern openings lead to the deck, connecting the home effortlessly with its outdoor setting.

The Result:

A home where strong contrasts in colour and texture continue throughout. Rich black walls, steel benchtops and bespoke steel ceiling panelling are softened by warm timber flooring and light fixtures.

Personalised touches capture the unique personality and style of the owners, from the jetty-inspired entry and chain downpipes to alternative artwork tiles — creating a space filled with a sense of belonging and authenticity.
