The Boulders

The brief:
This outstanding home is located in the hills looking over Lake Dunstan and commands a stunning view of the Pisa Range. From the beginning the owners stressed they wanted the house to blend into the surrounding rocks and scrubby vegetation. The resource consent had strict limitations on height, visibility from public spaces and materials so as changes were made we had to continually reference these limitations. Also the owners did not want the natural landscape disturbed which created further construction difficulties.
The project:
Careful consideration had to be given to site setup and placement of construction materials. With the owners also having a strong ‘create as we go approach’ so working closely with the designer and other planning professionals was crucial to success here. The house site provides stunning views but is also subject to ferocious winds which caused headaches and bad hair days for the team as they managed materials and tools. Late foundations changes required last minute engineering input along with creative planning from our construction team.
The result:
This project was challenging but very rewarding for the team and we were overjoyed with the result as were our clients. With approval from the owners we entered the house in the Master Builders House of the Year. Our build team were credited with a 96% score for workmanship and the house earned a place in the top 100 houses built in NZ in 2020. This house will command admiration for years to come.
